The original version by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers peaked at position #3 on Billboard magazine's R&B Juke Box chart during the Christmas season of 1947. Charles Brown was the singer and pianist of Johnny Moore's Three Blazers. Brown also recorded a hit solo remake of the song in 1956. Other versions that also charted were by Chuck Berry in 1958 (which peaked at position #71 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart) and by Otis Redding in 1968 (which peaked at position #9 on Billboard magazine's annual Christmas singles chart). Bruce Springsteen also recorded a version that first appeared on the 1987 various artists holiday compilation album A Very Special Christmas.
